July 10, 2008 is a day that the community of Aurora, Nebraska will never forget as they watched the infamous Fidelity Building burn beyond repair on the town's square. It's a bleak moment in time that community members would rather forget as a piece of the town's history went up in smoke.

In Wortman's, we listened to the scanner and overheard a cry for firemen up to the square to stop a fire in the Fidelity Building. This is what Wortman employees saw (and smelled) as the building took off in flames.
Down on the square, firemen were trying fervently to put the fire out. We had assistance from Grand Island, York, Hastings, Giltner, Hampton and Phillips. Six crews attempting to put out a structure fire before it swept across to other businesses.
Three aerial trucks and ground crews spraying water into the building.
Picture of the south (front) wall crashing into the street. This was a lucky shot and one that I'm glad I captured. Brick, glass and other debris covered the street and created a large cloud of dust.

Showing the now open-faced building after the south wall came down. Look at all the water running out of the building.

The fire was still burning at 10:30 PM on Thursday.

The Fidelity Building the next day after the fire was stopped and the crews were gone.

Buck's (the bar), Sensation Salon and the Fidelity Building. What a sad sight to see. There will be many more pictures of the fire on my flickr account.
